submission guidelines
Unsolicited submissions of poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction are not being accepted at this time. Our reading period will reopen May 1st, 2009. Visual art, reviews, and other prose genres are still being accepted; political or cultural pieces (essays, interesting collections of statistics, etc.) are especially encouraged if excellent.
In order to get a sense of the quality of the work we accept, please read at least one issue, or read excerpts from at least a few different issues. Please, do not submit material unless and until you are familiar with the magazine and the caliber of work accepted. Please also follow these guidelines:
- All submissions: Please type "Sub" and the type of work it is (for example: Sub: Photography) in the Subject line. If it doesn't fit a particular genre, that's fine: just identify it somehow (i.e., Sub: Trans-genre writing).
- All: If it is a simultaneous submission, please include that in the Subject line, as well (i.e., Sub: Poetry_ Simultaneous). We do accept simultaneous submissions, provided that you let us know when you submit, and also inform us immediately if work is first accepted elsewhere. We rarely accept previously published work, but on occasion do, especially if the work has only been published in a print journal with a small circulation, and is exceptional.
- Poetry: Please send two to five poems, in the body of the email or preferably as a Word attachment.
- Prose: Please send only the first 1,000 words if the piece is longer than that. We will let you know one way or the other if we would like to read more.
- Art: If submitting visual art, it would be greatly appreciated, though not absolutely necessary, if you could resize it first to be appropriate for computer monitors.
- All: Cover letters are nice, but not necessary. Please send submissions, with a short bio, to sirenlit@gmail.com
- And please do not submit material if we are still considering another submission of yours. Also please submit only twice a year unless invited to do so again.
Response times: After we start accepting submissions again, the goal is to respond to all submissions within two months; however, sometimes you’ll hear from us within only a week, while occasionally it might be closer to three months. After three months, please feel free to query about the status of your submission. (Subject line: Query_Submission Status)
Thank you so much for your interest in Siren!
